Red Milkpainted Antique Secretary (and a giveaway)

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a great Mother’s Day! Mine was the best one I’ve had in a long time. Topher and the unnamed child made a fancy brunch with Creme Brulee French Toast, Strawberry Shortcake Pancakes, and a Jalapeno Egg Casserole … and mimosas. My parents, brother, sister-in-law, and my niece all came over. We had taken some photos of the granddaughters together and blew them up for my mom’s gift, which she loved. I’m glad because trying to get photos last week when it rained every single day was a challenge.

Speaking of a challenge, my parents found me this antique secretary at an estate sale about a year ago. It was in pieces, the screws holding on the hinges were so stripped they were barely connected, and there were too many places that had to be filled with wood filler.  Topher ended up having to chisel out new hinges because the old ones just couldn’t be salvaged.

Once I had all of the repair work finished it was time to paint this bad boy.

A while back, the lovely Becky from Junque Boutique sent me some of her fabulous milkpaint to try.

I used Mason Jar Blue, with great success on this project. In fact, I loved it so much I decided to keep this piece.

For the secretary I decided to use Rust Belt Red.

Now if you haven’t used milkpaint before, it is very different from the chalkpaint or Plaster Paint that I normally use. It has a thinner, more watery consistency, and depending on the piece you are using, it on it can give you full coverage or a great chippy look that is hard to replicate with chalkpaint. If you want to have full coverage and none of the chippiness, they have a bonding agent that you can add to the paint.

Since the piece I was working on was an older one, I wanted that time worn, chippy look, so I refrained from using the bonding agent.

After using 2-3 coats, I left the room and let the paint do its thing. After an hour I came back in and it had chipped off perfectly. There was one spot where a little too much came off, and I simply painted right over it.

I then went over the whole piece with a fine grit sanding block to knock off any loose paint, and I distressed the edges.

I then coated the whole piece in Junque Boutique Furniture Sealer, which gives it a water resistant finish.

After spray painting  the old hardware an antique gold, I put it all back together.
