Happy Monday everyone!!! How was your weekend?
I spent time reorganizing all my hoarded furniture in the basement, cleaning-up, I went to see my sweet baby niece, the unnamed child and I watched Snow White and the Huntsman (which was pretty good until the last 5 seconds), and I finished this next furniture piece.
I found this green cabinet at a yard sale.
I knew that I wanted to repaint it, but I also knew that with all of the cut outs on the cabinet doors it would take a while, so when HomeRight contacted me about reviewing their Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer, I knew this would be the perfect project to try it out on!
I was a bit nervous about trying it out. I had never used a paint sprayer before and I had no idea what to expect. Once I opened it I was happily surprised that there were very few parts to assemble.
I gave my cabinet a light coat of sanding, I wiped it down, and I was ready to go.
I wasn’t sure if I needed to thin-out my paint or not, but the Finish Max comes with a “viscosity cup” that tells you whether or not your paint needs to be thinned. Such a great concept! You simply scoop-up the paint and time how long it takes to drain through the funnel. If you’re within the time frame specified in the directions, you’re good-to-go!
As it turned out, mine was already thin enough, so off I went! I started-off on a practice board to make certain I had a handle on it before moving onto my “real” piece.
This Fine Finish HVLP sprayer means that it has a high–volume, and a low pressure which keeps you from having much over spray and wasting paint.
It took me a few seconds to get the hang of it, but I was shocked at how smoothly it the paint went on. I was surprised to hear what sounded like a fan blowing when I pulled the trigger. After a couple of seconds the blowing, the paint started spraying in a super-fine mist — but with great coverage at the same time. I guess the fan is what pushes that paint through so smoothly.
For safety, I did wear a mask (sorry … but you won’t see photos of that) — the spray was fine enough, my only concern was that I would be breathing-in more paint mist than I wanted. But if you happen to live in climate where 30MPH wind is unusual (I don’t), and you can paint outdoors, then you might not need one at all — but I was in the shelter of my garage.
After only two coats I was finished!
Clean up was also much easier than I had anticipated. There wasn’t a lot of disassembly and part-scrubbing. I wiped-down the outside, rinsed of the cup and intake tube, and then ran a few cups of warm water through it, and that was it.
You can also use the Fine Finish Sprayer with clear sealer, polyurethane, primer, stain and varnish.
For my first time ever using a paint sprayer I was thrilled with the results! It had a very professional looking finish!
After my cabinet had dried , I taped off the top of the cabinet with Frog Tape. I then hand-painted the top with a smaller roller and the inserts with a small hand brush. I then distressed it and coated it in a clear wax.
I will definitely be using my Finish Max again!

Great color choices! Did you use a latex or chalk-based paint with the sprayer? I’m curious what brand you were able to use without thinning? (It sounds like I’m questioning your results, but I am not. I have one and am wondering about the necessity of thinning myself)
Shanna says
I did use chalk paint Scottie. Since I knew I was going to be putting it in a sprayer I mixed slightly on the thinner side to begin with. I was still prepared to have to dilute it some more but it wasn’t necessary. I love that the viscosity cup that it comes with takes the guess work out of it for you. Have fun with yours!

I was just saying TODAY that I will be needing one of these. My friend happened to mention the paint thickness issue, as well. So glad to read this at such an ideal time. I will be checking into this brand for sure. The cabinet is gorgeous, I’ll be the sprayer saved you some time!!

Looks great and I love the colors! The sprayer sounds like it was very easy to work. I am wondering too if you used chalk paint. You said you waxed the piece so I’m guessing it was, but it seemed kind of thick (when I used it) for a sprayer!..I’m thinking Im going to have to get one of these!
Shanna says
Thanks Karen! Knowing that I was going to use my chalk paint in a sprayer I made it a little thinner than normal. I thought I might have to thin it again once I got it in the sprayer but I didn’t. I was really pleased with this sprayer!

Looks adorable! I love the way you style your pieces too! Good to know I can use chalk paint in a sprayer… I have a different one, but should be similar results.

The cabinet looks fantastic! I love that the sprayer reduces overspray. My last spray paint project the paint seemed to end up everywhere but on the mirrors I was painting.

I would love to try a paint sprayer! It turned out great!

How gorgeous. Maybe the paint sprayer would help me get over my fear of tackling my first furniture redo projects.
Angie says
Wow, that turned out great. I’m sure it would have taken forever to hand paint that piece. I’ve got some chairs that need painting and I’ve been putting it off because they’re such a pain to paint. I need to check out these sprayers for sure. Thanks for the review and the inspiration! ~ Angie
