Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a good weekend! We actually had unseasonably warm weather here yesterday.
The good news from this weekend: Topher painted my dining room for me (part of my Valentine’s Day gift)! The bad news is the color was awful wah wah waaaaaa.
I wanted the room an aqua color. I picked out what I thought was the perfect shade. The first coat looked promising but after the second coat dried the room took on a neon psychedelic aqua appearance. So insanely bright that when you turned off the lights, it still glowed as bright as if the lights were still on.
It was ridiculous! You know when you look directly into the middle of a neon light and it hurts your eyes? That was my dining room.
So back to Lowe’s we went on Sunday, and we picked out an aqua with a bit more gray to tone it down. So now it is not such a bright green hue … it is just a bright blue hue. I hate it. Not just kind of but rally hate it. I’m pretty sure.
Let’s just say Topher did not want to hear that. It is totally not my fault that it looked way brighter on my walls than it did on the teeny weeny paint swatch card. And it is not my fault that the color we both agreed would take it from looking freaky to normal was wrong too. Maybe after I live with it for a few days it will be better. I also have nothing in the room right now: No curtains (OK, old ones I hate, but not ones I really want) or dining table. Nada. Maybe once that stuff is in place, it won’t look so stinking “easter eggish”?
Let’s hope.
The room was a really dark taupe color … so here is the before (please disregard the ugly curtains they won’t be staying):
Here is the after:
I will keep you updated as the room fills in. In the picture it looks more sky blue, but it is more aqua in person.
If, then, I still don’t like it, I will have to paint the freaking room myself. Not looking forward to that, so I really hope it pans out. So what do you guys think? Do you like it or hate it?

I'm a wife,
a stay at home mom of 3 dogs, a cat and an ama- zing teenage daughter.

Sorry that I absolutely loved it before you did anything to it I loved the dark taupe!
I am NOT a fan of blue …..
turquoise I would like or aqua
so if if it looks aqua
items in your room that are nutual, turquoise,
black, white, silver, gold, copper…
will pull it all together Fabio!!!!
Yes, it’s definitely an aqua Joy. I’m going to have a dining table in there. I’m going to stain the top of it a dark walnut and have the legs be a distressed ivory. Maybe once I get that in there, some curtains and a fun mirror and picture frames it will be alright. We shall see…
Mmmm… I am thinking it is never going to grow on you. I did the same thing with a yellow. I kept thinking I will like it when…such and such ….or such and such. Bottom line it was an absolutely beautiful yellow but not for my den.
awww…..I’m so sorry. I have SOOOOO been there. I hope that it grows on you…or you have a really great friend that loves to help you paint.
k.
btw: I can imagine a beautiful, white, chippy mirror hanging on the wall. lol!
I agree Kelli!
Hard to say, because I know for sure that the color probably looks different in person. I have taken many photos of my new paint to show family and it never really looks the same in the photo as it does on the wall and what I’ve described to them. But, I don’t hate what I see in the picture. It’s definitely not me, I’m more the before picture only lighter. If anyone can make it work, you can. : ) And, if you have to re-paint then so be it. Wish I was there and I’d help you. It does lighten up the room, which I do like.
It’s so hard because it changes color throughout the day. At noon today I was feeling better about it and by three I was back to not liking it. Ugh!
If you think the aqua is too bright, may I suggest a color? (Just what you wanted to hear). I used to be a decorator for Sherwin-Williams and I am very fond of their paint. I like their ‘Cashmere’ line of paint because it gives a soft egg shell appearance. The color you may want to try is, #6477 ‘Tidewater’.
What a fun job Judy! I will have to go check that color out!
It looks “Tiffany” blue to me. I love that color.
Thanks Carmen!
A glaze would soften the color…you might consider that.
Oh my gosh! The same thing happened when I had the bright idea to paint our pantry – BRIGHT being the key word here! Bought a lovely shade of yellow (or so I thought!), but it also ended up looking like a flourescent or neon yellow! Those little paint chip cards can be so deceiving! I hope you like it better once the room fills up. No matter what anyone else thinks, if you don’t like it, it will continue to bother you. I’ve found that things like this – especially color – tend to affect us creative types much more than “normal” people. I agree with Kari… if I lived there, I would help you repaint it!
I was so looking forward to seeing the neon!
My husband and I had to paint our living room twice over two days… not fun! I am happy we did it though, I really like the color now. (funny thing is the color is very close to your original color!) I know what you are going through. If you still don’t like it after a few days have the ‘unnamed daughter’ help you! Good luck my dear!
Hi Shanna, I personally love blue, the palest possible, like Fog. I really think you should give it a few days, decorate, and then see how you feel. The decorating makes all the difference, and you are good at that.

Try this color:
Wythe Blue by Benjamin Moore. It was their 2012 Color of the Year. I painted our family room and kitchen in this color and loved it. We just moved to a new house and I am planning to paint my office in this color.
