With the craft show coming up on Saturday, I have been trying to crank out projects as fast as humanly possible. I have a lot left to do, and two nights this week we get to go watch the unnamed child cheer. During dinner tonight, she tells Topher and I that she would rather us not be there. I asked her if we embarrass her in some way. She said kids her age don’t really like to admit that they have parents. Well … too bad, we are coming anyway. Topher thinks we should bring an air horn and paint our faces.
It made me remember me in middle school when I made my mom drop me off at school a block away. Or when we would go through the toll booth at the turnpike and she would reach to get the money from her purse and as she turned back she forgot she never rolled the window down and smashed into the window with her face and money flew everywhere. I could have died. Or the many times the fire dept had to come to our house because she set the kitchen on fire with her cooking. So humiliating back then. Or when we lived on Main street (where everyone cruised main) and my dad would be our mowing the lawn in his coaches shorts, CHIPS sunglasses and his knee socks. Sooo embarrassing.
Then you grow up and realize your parents are human. They were not just put on this earth to humiliate you, drive you around, and handout money. They might make you cringe at times, but they are also the only other people on the planet who will support you no matter what. They are the ones that drive across town when you are sick to get you the only soup that sounds good. They are the ones that will do without, so you can have braces that you will complain about for two years. They are the ones that sit out in the pouring rain to cheer you on in a sport that your not very good at. They are the ones who will be up all night during a sleepover with 6 teenage girls, making sure no one seeks out (or in), and after swearing they will never do that again, do it again … a few weeks later.
Yes, parents can be embarrassing folks, it’s a fact of life not matter how old you are. The only difference is when you are 15 you want your parents to just go away, and when you are 40 you want them to stay around as long as possible.
Speaking of sticking around a long time, I found this old table at a yard sale for $5. It was filthy but had great carving on it. I cleaned it up, coated it with DIY turquoise chalkpaint, distressed it, glazed it and coated it in clear wax. This little baby will be at Saturday craft show!

Oh yes..Christopher was a teen ager once too..and did the same thing. He never had the nerve to tell me to NOT come to his games/trackmeets, etc..because he knew that was same as talking to a brick wall…and he really was glad to know his parents were there loving him and supporting him! we all know parents who are too busy for their kids, and believe me kids remember it! And so the rest of us go to cheer them on too! Keep up the good work..guess we won’t be coming tonight if she wants no one there..but don’t count us out..we wi ll be coming later this week or next..she can count on it. But I promise NOT to wear only purple and scream out when I see her…” *Your child*, it’s Nana! here to cheer you on!!”

Cute story! I remember feeling that way about my Mom too. Funny to have the tables turned now. Speaking of tables turned, I love the turqoise table! We are going to have a great time!

Gorgeous! You really have a knack for knowing just the right color for your pieces. Can’t wait to see them in person.

What a sweet story. I too remember asking my dad to drop me off a block away and they could NEVER kiss me in front of my friends! Now that I am a parent of a teen boy who doesn’t want me around I called my parents and sorry for my ‘cold’ shoulder during my teen years. The truth is I will always be my daddy’s little girl and he will always be my baby boy. <3
